Visit Our Museums & Gardens
The Historical Society has changing exhibits throughout the year in four museum buildings. Exhibits feature photographs, artifacts and documents that describe and interpret Mount Desert Island's history from 1761 to today.
Children and adults can all enjoy these museum visits. There are activities for children in the Somesville Historical Museum and The Old Schoolhouse.
Two distinctive gardens are located beside the Somesville Museum. An Heirloom Garden displays plants that have flourished on Mount Desert Island from the late 18th century to today. The garden demonstrates the many practical, as well as decorative, uses of plants by island settlers.
A guide to the Heirloom Garden and information about the history and the medicinal and culinary uses of the plants may be purchased inside the Somesville Museum.
The restful Louisa Conrad Garden honors garden enthusiast and architect Louisa Conrad, a summer visitor to the island throughout her life. Featured are plants that would be found in island gardens in woodland areas of Mount Desert Island.
